United Way of Greater Knoxville’s (UWGK) will participate in tomorrow’s Day of Action by distributing books to 13 area park and recreation centers for the Summer Reading Program.

The annual Day of Action is a United Way Worldwide initiative that United Way of Greater Knoxville supports through a partnership with “Raise Your Hand Tennessee.”  The goal of “Raise Your Hand Tennessee” is to bring attention to the need for volunteers who will “raise their hand” to read to, tutor, and mentor children and youth.

United Way of Greater Knoxville will distribute over 500 books to 14 area parks and recreation centers.  At 9:30am on Friday, June 21st, (Day of Action) each child at these centers will receive a copy of “Where the Wild Things Are.”   United Way of Greater Knoxville volunteers will also be at the sites to stress the importance of reading and encourage children to read the books at home with their families.

These books are being donated on behalf of United Way of Greater Knoxville’s Immediate Past Board Chair, Rosalyn Tillman.  Ms. Tillman is a life-long educator and the Dean of Pellissippi State Community College, Magnolia Campus.
