After throwing a wildly successful 5k to support Food for Kids for the same minds have come together to throw a 5k with a Christmas twist: The Ugly Christmas Sweater 5k.

In July 156 Runners packed into Bearden Beer Market for the summer’s “Will Run for Food 5k”, and now the same organizations are partnering together for another chance to make an impact for Second Harvest’s Food for Kids Program.

The idea was to break out those ugly sweaters that only get used once or twice a year at holiday parties, and run with them to raise money for Food for Kids. When approached by The Point Church with the idea, Bearden Beer Market, 95.7 The X, Knox Endurance, and Highland Brewery jumped on the chance to be a sponsor the run.

The sweaters allow registrants to save on the costs that a 5k usually incurs by having to purchase race shirts.   By eliminating this cost 100% of the registration was able to go to “Food for Kids” program.

“I have a ton of race shirts that are just taking up space in my closet, so I have no problem giving up the race shirt so we can raise more money for the kids.” said Christie Loveday, one of the entrants for this year’s fun run.

July’s Will Run for Food 5k was able to raise over $2,000 for Food for Kids, and they hope to continue raising money for hungry children with this fun run.

The event is Thursday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m. with awards to follow.  Registrations are happening right now and will be accepted until race time on Thursday night.
