Food City Shoppers Fight Against Hunger

Since 1992, Food City, in partnership with their customers, has conducted an annual campaign to raise funds for local non-profit hunger relief organizations. The holiday promotion “Race Against Hunger” is co-sponsored by Kellogg’s.

“Hunger is a serious problem throughout our region.  Food City and Kellogg’s are proud to be a part of the Race Against Hunger,” said Steven C. Smith, Food City’s president and chief executive officer.

Throughout the promotion, $1, $3 and $5 scanable cards were available at Food City checkouts. Customers wishing to make a donation simply selected the desired dollar amount and it was added to their grocery bill. The 2014-2015 Race Against Hunger campaign raised over $397,500, and $10,450 was donated to local organizations. Sand Branch United Methodist Church Pantry, Piedmont Baptist Church, Strawberry Plains United Methodist Church, Marbledale Baptist Church, East Minister Presbyterian Church, North Acres Baptist Church, Vestile Methodist Fish Program, Fish Hospitality Pantries, New Life United Methodist Church Food Security, Lonsdale United Methodist Church, Fountain City United Methodist Church, Fountain City Ministry Center, and Halls Welfare Ministries were among those to receive a portion of the proceeds during Friday’s  check presentation ceremony.

“Millions of Americans need food assistance each year. The Food City Race Against Hunger campaign is one way we can help those in need right here in our own area,” said Paul Sabattus, vice president of marketing for Food City.

Bill Keeler of Fountain City Ministry Center, explained the far reaching impact this donation has on the 300-500 family units they serve each month. “Not only does Food City’s generous contribution help to provide food for these families, but by helping to keep the Ministry Center pantry well stocked, it leaves a portion of our operating  budget to purchase items like clothing for our children’s closet as well.”
