Opening Day is Saturday, March 24, 2018

Opening Day of the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball’s 2018 Regular Season is set for Saturday, March 24, 2018. On that day, two bare-handed base ball matches following the rules and customs of 1864 will come off at historic Ramsey House, 2614 Thorngrove Pike, Knoxville, TN 37914. At noon, the Knoxville Holstons will take on the Quicksteps of Spring Hill, and at 2:30 p.m., the Emmett Machinists of Knoxville will play the Highland Rim Distillers. Admission is free.

This year, 180 base ballists, or players, from across Tennessee will compete in 72 matches played at historic sites in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Johnson City, and Nashville. “We are looking forward to skillfully played matches,” says Bill “Colonel” White, co-captain of the Emmett Machinists. “And, of course, we also aim to put on a fun, historical event for the good people of Knoxville.”

“We are always humbled by the community and its support of vintage base ball at Ramsey House,” adds Lynn “Hawkeye” Bates, co-captain of the Knoxville Holstons. “It is our hope that even more families come out to our matches and learn about Knoxville’s early base ball teams, which we honor through our gentlemanly play.”

Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball schedule cards, as well as information about vintage base ball and Knoxville’s early base ball teams will be available at the matches. Concessions will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the educational mission of historic Ramsey House.
