Bring your gently used bicycles to the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on June 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help get kids on bikes. Both adult and children’s’ bikes will be accepted and all donations are tax deductible. The bikes will be refurbished by DreamBikes and donated to a local teen who has earned them through the Kids Love Bikes Program.
“We’re so excited to work with the community to help get more kids and adults riding bikes,” said Mitchell Connell, DreamBikes’ assistant manager. “Our goal is to create a riding community in Knoxville that’s diverse, inclusive, and fun. By donating a bike to our program, you’re contributing to our mission.”
DreamBikes is a full-service, non-profit bike shop that refurbishes used, donated bicycles and sells these quality bikes and gently used parts and equipment at more affordable prices than traditional bike shops. It strategically locates bicycle shops in underserved communities and employs local youth, teaching them bicycle mechanic skills, retail, and customer service, as well as widely-applicable skills such as problem-solving, effective communication, organization, team-work, responsibility, respect, and self-confidence. DreamBikes aims to build stronger communities by partnering with local organizations, serving underserved populations, and giving back to the local community through donated bikes, classes, mobile repair, and other outreach events.
DreamBikes currently has bike shops in Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Knoxville, TN; Rochester, NY. Since opening its first location in Madison, WI, in 2008, it has provided part-time jobs and skills training to over 150 youth and an additional 120 interns, awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to its youth employees, and refurbished and returned over 10,000 used bicycles to the community and donated countless more.
