The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Symphony Orchestra will partner with the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra for a concert on Sunday, Oct. 27.

This is the second concert of the UT Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-14 season, “Old Friends, New Beginnings.”

The 7:30 p.m. performance will be in the James R. Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building. It is free and open to the public.

Sunday’s performance is titled “Our Special Guests,” and will begin with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. Both orchestras will play two works together, side by side: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, which will showcase a solo string quartet and the two string orchestras that together represent more than 90 performers; and Jean Sibelius’ epic tone poem, Finlandia, which will feature 140 musicians on the same stage.

The performance is especially significant because several former members of the Youth Orchestra now play in UT’s Orchestra Program, said James Fellenbaum, UT director of orchestras and music director of the Youth Orchestra, who will conduct the concert. The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association is celebrating its 40th anniversary this season.

The concert is guaranteed to be a treat for music lovers, he added.

“Aside from seeing outstanding orchestral playing, audiences will find this concert of additional interest because of the variety of pieces being performed, and they will see young, talented musicians performing together on one stage,” Fellenbaum said. “For the musicians, it will be a special and unique opportunity to perform literature in this fashion as two combined orchestras, and perform side by side with other student musicians, all with varying backgrounds and experiences.”
