Evening of Elegance
On April 11, Knox County Council PTA will host its annual Evening of Elegance at which local unit PTAs across the county are honored for their extraordinary work in our schools. In addition, the group will recognize some outstanding individuals who have gone above-and-beyond the call of duty by pledging their time and efforts to these groups.
In addition to the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Local unit, awards for Advocacy in Action, Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding Principal, Outstanding Elected Official, Outstanding Volunteer, and others will be presented. All PTA/PTSA members, teachers, principals, community partners, and elected officials are invited to attend this special event.
The event will be held at The Orangery (5412 Kingston Pike) on Monday, April 11. Doors open at 6 p.m., program starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and must be purchased in advance by April 1. Contact Stacy Mead at 865-250-4874 or stacycmead@gmail.com for more information.
Teacher Supply Depot Open Morning of April 2
On Saturday, Apr. 2, teachers, teaching assistants and nurses of the Knox County Schools will have the opportunity to shop for free classroom supplies when the Knox County Schools Teacher Supply Depot opens for the final time in the 2015-2016 school years. Every teacher in attendance will receive a free box of supplies from Kroger.
Located at 709 N. Cedar Bluff Road in the former Cedar Bluff Intermediate School, the Teacher Supply Depot is a joint venture of the Teacher Supply Depot PTA and the Knox County Schools.
Those planning to shop at the Teacher Supply Depot must bring a school ID or another form of identification to be admitted. Doors open at 7 a.m. and close at noon.
Powell Middle School Student to Attend National Geographic State Spelling Bee
Powell MS student Anna Kimsey has been named as one of 100 students who qualified to compete in the National Geographic State Bee on Friday, April 1, 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 28th year.
Spelling Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took an online qualifying test. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees.

Austin East Magnet High School Presents a Night of Thanks and Celebration
The public is invited to join in a sendoff and appreciation of sponsors for supporting the Austin East Spanish Travel Club’s first trip to France and Spain. The celebration will be held on Friday April 1, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. in the AE Performing Arts Auditorium, 2800 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. There will be performances by the AE West African, AE Dance Company, and much more!

Art and Math Learning on Display at Vine Middle
Vine Middle Magnet Academy, The Office of Innovation, the Math Department, and the CTE Department are collaborating on an innovative art and math activity for 6th grade students at Vine on March 31.
Students will draw a life-sized grid outside and plot points by walking to the correct ordered pair, turning the grid into a human coordinate plane that will represent an African mask as viewed from above.
This mask will represent what 6th grade students have been creating and designing in their art classes. The math and CTE departments, in collaboration with Vine Middle Magnet Academy and the Office of Innovation will videotape the process using a drone.
Knox County Farm Bureau Women Visit Career Magnet Academy
Last week the Knox County Farm Bureau’s Women’s group showed support for CMA Staff and students as they visited the campus and met with the 20 students who have chosen the Sustainable Career Pathway. Neil Denton, gardening guru addressed the sustainable living students.
CMA teacher Mike Blankenship is pleased to report that several students have shown a strong interest in the field of agriculture, including seven students who attended the 88th State Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention in Gatlinburg, TN March 21-22. These students included Tobias Dubose, Tylor Gann, Brittany Read, Josh Rutherford, Paul Stiles, Darby Swanson, and Lauren Williams. The CMA FFA at PSCC chapter (TN0337) is one of the newest chartered FFA chapters in the state.
