On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2019, an annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Knoxville National Cemetery. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The ceremony will be held by the Major William A. McTeer Camp #39, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; the 79th New York Infantry Cameron Highlanders reenactment group; the Lucinda Heatherly Detached Tent #3, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; the Polly O’Toole Auxiliary #17 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Cavett Station Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, who will hand out American flags and U.S. Flag Code booklets.
Tom Howard, Chief of Staff of the National Cemetery Association, will speak. Tom and Sue Wright will portray President and Mrs. Lincoln. Attendees will be invited to explore the inside of
the Union Soldiers Monument, one of the largest Union monuments in the South. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of heroes who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic.
The 79th New York Infantry is based in East Tennessee and has members from across the area. They are dedicated to preserving the memory of those who fought in the Civil War, educating others on the war and the common soldier, and helping preserve the history of our area.
The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War was organized and federally chartered in 1885. The mission of the DUVCW is to perpetuate “the memories of the fathers of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, their loyalty to the Union, and their unselfish sacrifices for the preservation of the same.”
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who
