Twenty-year Central High School Alumni Association President R. Larry Smith and Treasurer Margaret Murdough presented a $5,000 check to the Central High School Bobcat band program. The band, one of the oldest in the Knoxville area, has a rich history and includes notable past band directors such as O’Dell Willis, who created the school fight song “Red and Black,” and nationally recognized Norman Woodall.

Current band director Alex Mink, in his 7th year, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that it will be used for general operating expenses, repairs, transportation, uniform replacements/dry cleaning, contest fees and equipment.

Mink said, “It’s been exciting to watch the program grow and thrive.” The band comprises 55-60 students and is currently working on an upcoming show called “In the Pines,” featuring alt-rock and ‘80s genres. The band will also perform at Neyland Stadium at the September 14 UT game against Kent State.

Misty Brown, co-chair of the Friends of Bobcat Band, emphasized the significant growth of the fundraising and volunteer program that supports the high school band. She highlighted the community’s role in this growth and the importance of the fine arts programs like band and color guard, being accessible to all students.

“Band helps kids find their place, and that’s why this program is so important: to develop musical skills and develop them as individuals. And Mr. Mink does a great job of instilling that in the kids as they move forward. The kids are thrilled with the donation and excited about this upcoming year.”

In addition to monetary donations, the band welcomes items such as water/sports drinks, bagged ice, sunscreen and pregame meals. Anyone interested in donating can reach out via email at knoxcentralband@gmail.com.
