Bearden softball players remember fallen veterans
Wreaths Across America event held at Lyons View

Bearden High School’s softball team participated in the Wreaths Across America event again this year.
Their community service was laying a wreath at a gravestone of a fallen veteran and saying out loud his or her name to keep their memory alive.
Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization that honors veterans and their families. More than two million volunteers and supporters gather annually on a Saturday in December to “Remember, Honor and Teach” at more than 4,600 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad.
This year’s site for the Bearden team was the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at 5901 Lyons View Pike and began at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14.
“It means a lot to not only me, but the whole team, to be able to lay the wreaths every year,” said senior Kendall Hubbs.
“It really sets the perspective of why we are able to play softball and enjoy the sport we love – which is because of our fallen troops and soldiers who fought for our freedoms. Especially since having family members and teammates whose families also served our country, it allows us to bond over the respect we share for our troops who protect us every day with their own lives.”
Sophomore Jenna Gonzales said she felt honored to be able to participate in the laying of the wreaths with her teammates.
“This event means so much to all of us and is a great way to get involved with the community. Laying the wreaths felt like such a tribute to the lives of our fallen soldiers. Though, the most meaningful part of the event is saying the names of each soldier to honor their legacy.
“The fact that we are a part of making sure that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and they will live on forever in our minds is beautiful.
“This event is a reminder for our team that we would not be here without their selflessness and hope for our futures. We are forever grateful for our fallen heroes and will keep them in our mind as we go on in life.”
Also thankful to participate, freshman Raya Inge said: “My grandpa was a Marine and served in the Korean War, receiving a Purple Heart and Silver Star. Because of our veterans we are free and we should always honor those who sacrificed for us. It was so special placing a wreath and saying a veteran’s name out loud to remember them. It really meant a lot to me to honor them and to keep their name remembered for all they did for us. Thank you to all our servicemen and servicewomen from all branches of military for your service.”
Bearden Coach Kenneth Boles said it was truly an honor to participate in such a meaningful ceremony.
“Taking part in a wreath-laying event to honor fallen soldiers with your Bearden softball team reflects great respect and gratitude for their sacrifices,” he summed up. “It’s a moment to come together, show appreciation, and embody the values of remembrance and unity. Being part of this ceremony is both a privilege and a powerful way to pay tribute.”
