Wednesday’s Knoxville Fire Department Spring Recruitment event drew lots of attendees to the EXPO Center where people could learn about the department and the duties and benefits of firefighters, and actually fill out an application.

Applicants and their families talked with firefighters, viewed equipment and vehicles, and learned about the benefits and the daily life of being part of the department.

Chief Stan Sharp said the fire department is looking for more than a couple dozen new members to help fill out the department’s roster. He said the upcoming graduating class of about 40 new members and the results from the recruiting event could bring the organization to near full strength.

The current men and women of the department demonstrated the equipment and spoke on the training involved in becoming a firefighter and EMT. Firefighters get a health plan, pension, and the pride of serving the community.

If you missed the event, you still have until March 27 to apply. No experience is required, but applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass drug and alcohol testing, background investigation, and post-offer physical examination. The application form can be found online at KnoxvilleTN.gov/Jobs.
