Knoxville’s Hubert Smith hosts a luncheon on the first Friday of the month in the Crown Plaza Hotel that always draws a variety of local people for socializing and lunch. The event promises no partisan politics, controversy or disagreements.

The March 7 gathering filled the tables with state, county and city officials, candidates, business owners and representatives, the media, and some new people who had heard of the gathering and wanted to see why it is so popular.

Smith, a long-time radio program host, East Tennessee Public Broadcasting member and community leader, began the luncheon many years ago. Each guest pays less than $20 for a full lunch with salad and drink and each is given an opportunity to speak briefly, identifying themselves, their organization, and why they are attending.

At the end of each luncheon, a drawing is held and winners receive a gift donated by some of those attending.

The Motley Crew luncheon is more of a social gathering with lots of conversation before the meal and shared thoughts at each table. Smith often brings the crowd up to date with upcoming events and seems to know everyone who is present.

The camaraderie of those at the luncheons is contagious and handshakes and hugs are shared among people who know each other and newcomers alike.

Smith, who has suffered several medical problems and uses his cane, greets everyone at the door and often jokes with people as he hosts the event.

“It is a fellowship with people who attend to have a good time,” Smith told The Focus.
