Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke drifting out of a downtown area storm drain or even coming out of interior sinks and drains inside buildings on Thursday afternoon. It’s part of a scheduled “smoke test,” in which smoke will be directed into the stormwater system beneath the Clinch Avenue Viaduct.
The work, slated for 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, is a first step in monitoring and maintaining an unmapped storm drain.
Any smoke that residents or businesses may see is harmless and will dissipate in about 30 minutes.
However, if you see smoke in your building, please call 865-215-2148 to notify the City’s Stormwater Engineering Division where the smoke was observed.
