“We cut fresh meat daily,” said John Maxwell, General Manager of Chicken City on North Central in Knoxville.
You’ve seen Chicken City, located at 2518 North Central, but if you haven’t been inside you’re missing something special. While the neighborhood grocery store is known for its fresh, not frozen, chicken, the store also has a variety of other fresh meats and just about any other grocery need you might want, even original Selecto Bologna, bread, spices, milk, potatoes, etc.
It’s surprising how much variety you’ll find in a small space. Maxwell explains that Chicken City has a butcher with 30 years of experience to help serve your family’s needs.
Helen Johnson, who has worked there for 35 years, will greet you when you enter and check out your groceries when you leave.
Chicken City stays busy not just with North Knoxville customers but also with numerous people who live outside the area but know the quality of the chicken there.
“We have customers who stop by from LaFollette, Manardville, and places like Tellico Village,” he told The Focus, adding that the store specializes in “Chicken that tastes like the chicken your grandmother made.”
“We don’t infuse our chicken with water,” Maxwell said, pointing to the containers of fresh chicken.
“We do things the old fashion way. We cut and sell a variety of fresh beef, pork, chicken and fresh sausage and offer other groceries. We like working with our customers and we give them personal service. We get to know you by your name,” he said.
Maxwell said that Chicken City works with various churches and caterers because the store is known for quality meats. They specialize in chicken “that tastes like chicken.”
Chicken City is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays. If you want more information call (865) 524-4750.
