The Tennessee Department of Health’s East Region is excited to announce the launch of its new Mobile Public Health Unit, aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility and community outreach across the region. A ribbon cutting ceremony recently took place at the East Tennessee Regional Health Office in Knoxville, attended by regional leadership and the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health, Dr. Ralph Alvarado.
This innovative mobile unit, funded by a federal grant, will provide a wide range of vital public health services to all 15 counties in the East Region, including:
• Immunizations
• Health screenings (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes)
• Family planning services
• Health education and promotion
• Infectious disease testing and prevention
• Maternal and child health services
• Emergency preparedness and response activities
The Mobile Public Health Unit is the first of its kind in the State of Tennessee and represents a significant advancement in our mission to deliver essential health services directly to the communities we serve, especially in rural areas of East Tennessee. By bringing these services closer to home, we aim to reduce barriers to healthcare access and ensure that all residents can receive the care they need.
“Our new Mobile Public Health Unit is a game-changer for public health in East Tennessee,” said Ashley Lyons, Regional Director. “We are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our communities, and this unit will allow us to reach more people, particularly in underserved rural areas.”
This unit will operate similarly to brick-and-mortar county health departments, staffed by experienced health professionals who are committed to providing high-quality care. The unit will travel to various locations throughout the region on a regular schedule, with outreach efforts to inform the community of upcoming events.
The Mobile Public Health Unit will enhance access to critical health services, reduce health disparities, and promote a healthier future for all residents of East Tennessee. We look forward to serving our community with this new resource and making a tangible difference in public health outcomes.
