Have you ever wondered how the Gibbs Community got its name? A revolutionary war hero named Nicholas Gibbs and his family was among the first white settlers in the area of what is now known as the Gibbs Community. The log cabin he built on Emory Road has been in the same family for over 200 years.
Nicholas Gibbs has thousands of descendants, many who still live in this area. If your last name is Anderson, Browning, Graves, Gibbs, Hopper, Irwin, Lett, Longmire, Loy, Luttrell, Miller, Monroe, Savage, Sharp, Snodderly, Wolfenbarger, Zachary or one of dozens of other common names in this area, you are probably a descendant.
The Nicholas Gibbs Historical Society invites anyone who is interested in learning more to attend an open house on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the original log home at 7633 East Emory Road, near Harbison’s Crossroads. From Harbison’s Crossroads in Gibbs, travel northeast on Emory Road about 1/2 mile and the house is on the left.
There will be food, music and an opportunity to learn a little history and mingle with others who are interested in local history.
The society has commemorative caps, mugs, and t-shirts available as well as a genealogy CD of the Gibbs line for use with Family Tree Maker. They are currently fundraising for a new pavilion behind the house which will be a new venue available to the community.
After a brief business meeting, a time-honored tradition is a potluck “dinner on the ground,” which some would argue is the best part of the meeting! Bring a folding chair and a potluck dish and spend the afternoon exploring the fascinating history of this well-preserved log cabin, complete with original household items and artifacts.
The Nicholas Gibbs Historical Society owns, manages and maintains the Gibbs’ family homesite. Membership in the Society is open to anyone who is a descendent of the Nicholas Gibbs family. Details about membership in the Nicholas Gibbs Historical Society will be available at the meeting. Contact NGHS President Joe Longmire at (865) 687-0314 for more information.
