Tuesday, June 9, 2020, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. O’Connor Senior Center (611 Winona St.)
Senior Corps volunteers will be honored with a drive-through recognition event in the parking lot of O’Connor Senior Center. As they drive through, Office on Aging staff will put goodie bags in the trunks of their cars. The bags will be filled with snacks and small tokens of appreciation for their service to the community. Nearly 450 older adults volunteer with Senior Corps, a program administered by the CAC Office on Aging.
Senior Corps is a group of seniors who serve in the following programs:
The Senior Companion Program enrolls eligible seniors, age 55+, to volunteer 20 hours per week by providing personal supportive services to homebound adults. Volunteers receive a small stipend. Senior Companions will arrive from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
The Foster Grandparent Program enrolls eligible seniors, age 55+, to volunteer 20 hours per week to serve in children’s programs in Knox and Blount Counties. Volunteers receive a small stipend. Foster Grandparents will arrive from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides people 55+ with opportunities to share skills and talents by serving community agencies as volunteers. RSVP volunteers will arrive from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
“Some of the hardest working older adult volunteers in Knoxville will be honored at this Drive Through Recognition,” said Gina Whitfield, Foster Grandparent program manager, “Usually, we are able to host a celebration meal for them, but this year we had to think outside the box to let them know how valuable they are as volunteers for homebound seniors, at-risk youth and the greater Knoxville Community. We can’t thank them enough for hundreds and hundreds of hours of service they provide to our community.”
