The Salvation Army Knoxville Area Command Celebrates 125 Years of Serving the Knoxville Area

 ~ from The Salvation Army

Knoxville, TN – The Salvation Army Knoxville Area Command began serving the Knoxville area in 1899. 125 years later, The Salvation Army is still a prominent fixture in the community, and the Army felt this was worthy of a celebration!

Major Cameron Henderson, Area Commander, reflects “The LORD sent The Salvation Army to Knoxville 125 years ago to find those who were hurting the worst and to share with them the love of God. The mission is still the same, even if the methods of serving have changed!”

The Salvation Army’s mission calls forth service to meet human needs without discrimination. The Salvation Army (TSA) seeks that each individual experiences the fullness of life, and our goal is to help provide that by meeting basic human needs, providing foundations of well-being, and creating lasting opportunities for fullness in the community. For the past 125 years and throughout Knox and the surrounding counties, TSA has and continues to provide programs and services specifically geared to help meet these human needs for homeless and/or low-income men, women, and children. The ministry of the Army now touches thousands of lives annually through residential programs, case management, emergency assistance, Christmas assistance, and disaster relief.

To celebrate this milestone, The Salvation Army Knoxville Area Command has a week of special events planned. Basic information is included below, and additional details will be shared soon regarding each individual event.

  • October 17th-20th: Experience music that uplifts the soul! The Southern Staff Band, The Salvation Army’s premier brass band, is visiting Knoxville this weekend, bringing joy through music across the region.
  • October 22nd: Help raise hope and restore lives at the 11th Annual Cup of Hope Luncheon benefiting the Joy D. Baker Center.
  • October 26th: Be a part of the celebration at Miles of Smiles! As the Knoxville Area Command culminates the week of events and marks 125 years of service in Knoxville, The Salvation Army is giving away 125 bikes to children in need!
