Halls matriarch celebrates 95th birthday
Elmarie Hall Carter celebrated her 95th birthday last week on October 9. She is one of the oldest Thomas Hall Family descendants still living in the Halls Crossroads area.
Elmarie was born and raised in the Halls Community since 1929. She graduated from Halls High School in 1947 as valedictorian of her class and then attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Elmarie has seen many changes in the Halls area over the decades. She is a member of Sharon Baptist Church and also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of her 4th great-grandfather Thomas Hall, who fought in the Revolutionary War. She attributes her good health and longevity to hard work, healthy eating, and a firm faith in God.
At a recent birthday get-together at Litton’s Restaurant in Fountain City, she discussed fond memories of times long ago with her sister Mary Evelyn Hall Bright, daughter Angela Carter Adams, and niece Cathy Bright Robinson.
One of the many memories she shared was of herding cattle with her younger brother Boyd Hall (now deceased) on Emory Road to another nearby pasture in the 1930s and 1940s. Back in those days, it was a simple unpaved two-lane country road that hardly saw a car.
Elmarie and Mary Evelyn also discussed how they enjoyed the first restaurant hamburgers they ever had which they purchased at the original Litton’s Grocery in Inskip. She still enjoys sewing, cooking, gardening and reading her Bible. Elmarie’s parents were Elmer J. Hall and Vetta Lett Hall and younger siblings Boyd Hall (deceased), Mary Evelyn Hall Bright, 90, and Avanelle Hall Higgins (deceased).
