Democrat Governor Says His Party Is Toxic
By John J. Duncan Jr.
Many political observers think that Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, is the man most likely to be the Democrat candidate for president in 2028.
That is why what he said about his own party on a recent broadcast of the Bill Maher Show was so significant.
The New York Times reported on March 29 that Newsom said, “The Democratic brand is toxic right now,” and that he pointed to “a recent NBC News poll that showed Democrats with a 27 percent favorability rating, the lowest in at least a generation.”
The story said Newsom “criticized Democrats for being judgmental” and for “resorting to a ‘cancel culture’ to ostracize people” with whom they disagreed.
“We talk down to people,” Newsom added, confirming what one Democrat consultant said on MSNBC, that the party had become “too elitist.”
In the same story, the Times reported that Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, had also criticized his party, saying they were in danger of becoming a “permanent minority.”
Democrats in recent years have been dominated by wealthy liberals, college professors, black women, and those on the very far Left of the political spectrum.
John Judis and Ruy Teixeira, two longtime Democratic consultants, wrote a book published in 2023 called “Where Have All The Democrats Gone?”
They wrote that Democrats had allowed the things that people cared about “to be overshadowed by more elitist topics like identity politics, gender ideology, defunding the police, climate change, etc.”
They added that Democrats were turning people off by mistakenly following a “vaguely defined yet rigidly enforced ideology of anti-racism, which sees white supremacy as the force behind every institution in America.”
Most Americans are not racists. Bad things happen to everyone, white or black. Yet too many black leaders have convinced too many of their followers that if something bad happens to them, it is because of racial discrimination.
Yet, while most people are not racists, most did believe it was wrong to limit the choices for the most recent appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court only to black women.
Republicans have their own problems. As I pointed out in last week’s column, the party that has the White House almost always loses seats in the House and Senate in the mid-term elections.
Also, it is a mistake for President Trump to start talking about running for a third term only two months into this term. And, while Elon Musk is trying to do many things that really need to be done, it was a mistake and helped the Democrats to make such an unappealing billionaire the face of the administration.
But the Republicans need to thank the Democrats for helping them on many issues.
They need to thank the Democrats for criticizing the deportation of Venezuelan gang members, because the overwhelming majority want them out.
They need to thank Democrats and their buddies in the ACLU for fighting for illegal immigrants and trying to keep our borders open when the overwhelming majority want the borders secured.
Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat from New York, said “When I first started talking about immigration, the need to secure the border – a lot of consultants were like, ‘Well, that’s a Republican issue. I don’t know if you should talk about that’. But I said ‘That’s what the people are talking about in my district.’”
Suozzi won re-election but said, “I think the Democratic brand is really in trouble, and it’s being portrayed as this crazy-left, you know, out-of-touch thing.”
Republicans need to thank the Democrats for becoming a socialist party, because the overwhelming majority know socialism has destroyed the economy in most nations around the world.
Republicans need to thank the Democrats for wanting to force everyone into very expensive electric vehicles, because the overwhelming majority do not want them.
Republicans need to thank the Democrats for being so hateful and demanding about the Covid vaccine, because the overwhelming majority know those vaccines were very ineffective and even harmful to many.
Republicans need to thank the Democrats for electing so many high-tax, soft-on-crime officials so that millions are now fleeing Democrat-run cities and states and moving to Republican states like Tennessee.
Republicans need to thank Democrats for wanting to send even more billions to Ukraine, because the overwhelming majority would rather keep that money here for their own families.
Democrats seem to believe in government and forcing people to do things and giving more power to bureaucrats. Republicans believe in freedom and choices and power to the people.
