Is it Summer Yet?

By Ralphine Major

Almost! The sights and sounds indicate as much, and the calendar is catching up. The official start of summer happens this week, June 20. Jesus even mentioned the season in Matthew 24:32: “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh” (KJV). I always connected summer’s entry as being on or near our father’s birthday, June 21. Looking at the date reminds me that he would have turned ninety years old this year.

I have been noticing signs of summer for a couple of weeks. Schools across the country are finishing up graduations and now enjoying summer break. Many friends have shared exciting pictures of their vacations at the beach or visiting family in other states. Reminders of Vacation Bible School have been appearing in the papers and on street signs everywhere.

Summer always seems too brief—that season filled with the sweet smell of honeysuckle vines and hay bales in the field; the warmth of sunshine rays; the sight of white, fluffy clouds; and fun activities like growing vegetable gardens and grilling out. Enjoy your favorite part of this special season each day, for it will soon be gone. Have a wonderful and safe summer!
